Vacation...

I am totally enjoying vacation so far.  I'm loving sleeping in.  I so need sleep.  I'm giving myself this week to do nothing.  Next week I'll start tackling some school work, emphasis on "some."

School Parent Groups Empower Push For Education Reform

Quote from the article that ought to get your blood boiling:
"Parents have a different incentive structure than anyone else," said Ben Austin, Parent Revolution's executive director. "They're the only ones who really care about kids."

Hey Mr. Austin, teachers care about kids too!  And hey Mr. Austin, ever meet any parents who didn't really care about their kids?  I have.

Unbelievable.  We have to know what's going on out there!!

Deep thoughts about the world around us...

This has certainly been an interesting week.  Lots of usual and unusual craziness.  Quite a few parent complaints and incidents involving parents have kept me and others on our toes.  Today a teacher (who shall remain anonymous) told me that a parent of one of her students basically said that she wasn't pretty.  Not to be creepy or pervy, but I happen to disagree with the parent.  The anonymous teacher is pretty (again, just being observant...not creepy or pervy - no harassment here).  This got me thinking about pretty people, average looking people and ugly people.  For the most part, pretty people know they're pretty.  It's so obvious.  It's like they were born with a mirror attached to their hand.  Sometimes they tell us how pretty they are, even when we really don't care, but we pretend to care, well, because they're pretty.  (When I use the word pretty, it could also mean handsome, depending on the person's gender - just wanted to make that clarification).  Average people are usually quiet about their looks.  They keep it to themselves.  A few average looking people think they are pretty, when they really aren't...they are just average.  Average looking folks are usually humored to make them feel better - it's the right thing to do.  I'm wondering if ugly people really understand that they are ugly?  Do they know?  Do we do to them the same thing we do to the average people?  Should they be humored too?  Should we be very blunt and let them know that they are ugly...especially if they accuse someone of being ugly who is obviously average or pretty?  Should unknowing ugly people be informed of their ugliness?  Maybe just the mean ugly people should be informed.  What's the right situation to tell someone, "Hey, you know you're ugly, right?"  So many unanswered questions.  What do you think?

Good-bye Kathy

I'm trying to stay positive this year, but it has been very difficult. Losing Kathy is just another blow to the gut. I'm really going to miss her. She is such a genuinely kind person. She was such a calming and reassuring presence in the office. It just won't be the same without her.

Cats Poop

Today I managed to visit quite a few rooms. Enjoyed observing purposeful teaching and learning, content standards driven of course. I was reading the wall in one of the first grade classrooms, when I came across a story about a cat..."I have a cat. My cat poops. I love my cat." How can you not love first graders? A fifth grader gave me a "super star" sticker. That made my day. During lunch, one of the kids said to me, "Hey, I know you. You were talking to that puppet on tv." What can I say, I'm famous. Looks like we had a good turnout for Back to School night. Awesome. One of the playground bathrooms got tagged during BTSN. Not awesome.

TMI

This morning I was coming into the main building when I saw Ms. Kena and Trent by the boys' bathroom. Ms. Kena made a comment to Trent about him taking way too long in the bathroom. Trent, in a matter of fact way said "What, I had two breakfast burritos this morning."

First Day of School

The night before the first day of school I am a bit nervous and can't get to sleep.  This year there were no nerves and I was able to get to sleep.  I guess I'm just numb.  I haven't really been looking forward to beginning the year.  It's sad that so many great teachers are gone.  It's sad that our test scores went down.  It's sad that class size has increased.  So many things to be sad about.  This morning a parent was rude to me because I don't speak Spanish.  He told me that I had a Mexican face and that I should speak Spanish.  This was at 7:30...nice way to start the day.  I noticed a lot of the kids didn't say hi to me...guess I've been around so long that I've just kind of blended into the scenery.  Lunch was fun...so many smiling, happy faces.  Most of the time, lunch with the kids gives me that boost of energy I need to get through the day...plus, I love hanging out with the cafeteria crew...they are the best!  Bring on day two!

Highest Paying Jobs with the Most Time Off

I laughed out loud when I read this story in the Huffington Post.

7. Principals (Education Administrators, elementary and secondary school)
> Hours worked/year: 1,846
> Median hourly earnings: $46.49
> No. employed: 222,270
> Hours worked/week: 39.5> Median annual income: $86,970
> Top annual income: $129,480

In order to be eligible to be a principal, applicants mush have a teaching certificate and also possess sufficient experience in school administration. Principals are responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of faculty and students. According to the BLS, the workload can be stressful and demanding at times. However, while some principals work year-round, the vast majority at the elementary and middle school level work full-days during the school-year, but do not work summers. This means principals have nearly three months to themselves. That, combined with a median salary in excess of $85,000, and the high end making nearly $130,000, principal is a great deal for all who are fortunate enough to earn the position.
